Food security

There is an alarming rate of increase in demand of food as we pursue the 21st century. According to statistics taken during the end years of the 20th century, human population over the world has increasingly grown in the past few decades. Records show that between 1900 and 2000, human population in the world grew by at least 300%; from 2 billion to 6 billion people. Today the world population is about 7 billion people. It is expected to hit an alarming 10 billion by 2050 says. The world population is evidently increasing according to recent statistics. On the other hand, land, the chief resource upon which food production relies on is not increasing. Land is not only faced with increasing pressure to accommodate its people, but also with the issue of competing interests regarding its use. Thus, at the current rates, it is not an over statement predicting that the demand of food may outdo food production in the future. It thus becomes inevitable to safeguard our food.
Besides, the increase in demand of food, the globe today is faced with a challenge of climate change. According to the World Food Program, over 87% of the world’s food production is directly depended on natural climatic conditions. It has further been concluded that at least 96% of the artificially produced food is indirectly depended on natural environments in one way or another. Therefore, with the hard striking shock of climate change, food production patterns are likely to change and the quantities of food produced to lower in the long run. Indeed, the effects of climate change are already being faced in majority developing countries, whose economies are agriculturally depended. The world has seen intense droughts and famines resulting from short periods of rains. There has also been flooding resulting from too much rain. Both of these cases are unfavorable conditions for food production. For these reasons, we are faced with decreasing food produce a result of the changes in climate. For this reason, there is a dire need to safeguard our food.
