ORAL LITERATURE AND SOCIALIZATION

Oral literature socialites us in that it makes us good members of society; it brings us together with other members of the society. People get together to listen to a story, dance to a song or share jokes and riddles.
When people tell one another stories or sing songs together they are sharing not only their knowledge of the songs or stories but also their experiences and their feelings and their enjoyment of the performances. Hence they begin to know one another; they develop a sense of community; of belonging together.
Another important aspect of socialization is that it teaches us social values. Most pieces of oral literature convey, in a beautiful and lively manner, the belief of our societies what they encourage as good and decent behavior, what they discourage as bad and improper behavior and what they would like to do. These performances of oral literature makes us responsible members of society by instilling in us beliefs, morals, concerns and aspirations of our societies.
Taking part in oral literature encourages us to improve our skills in speaking, reciting, and singing. We also develop our memory, our ability to think fast (such as when we share riddles) and systematically and our confidence in communicating orally.
Oral literature makes us enjoy and respect language especially the spoken word. Oracy is the skill of the spoken word, good speech and. Orate is a person who can speak clearly and articulately and is highly respected. Good speakers usually achieve success because they are able to persuade people to give them or do for them what they want. A large number of important professions in our society such as teaching, salesmanship, acting, broadcasting, law and political leadership depend largely on oracy, a skill that is perfectly acquired in oral literature.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ORAL LITERATURE IN SOCIETY

Oral literature is meaningful and useful to us in many and different ways. It is only material from the past but also a great deal of new material is being composed and performed today. People everywhere including those in towns make up stories, jokes, sayings and songs about their experiences and they share them by performing them in theatres (professionally), among friends and family (casually) and in school (institutionally).
Both old materials from the past and new material performed by our oral artists is useful to us in a some ways:
ORAL LITERATURE AND ENTERTAINMENT
First, all human beings need o relax, to amuse themselves and get their minds off the dull struggles, worries and sorrows of life. An exciting well-told story, a sweet melodious and rhythmic song, or even a simple exchange of jokes and riddles soothes our minds and refreshes our brains.
Secondly, entertainment is a useful means of educating and informing people. We are attracted to stories, proverbs or songs because they are enjoyable. Moreover, they contain useful information and skills which we learn as we enjoy ourselves.
ORAL LITERATURE AND AWARENESS
Oral literature makes us aware of ourselves, other human beings, our environment and our history. Stories, songs, proverbs, riddles and jokes in oral literature use colorful words and vivid images to describe human beings, their feelings and their behavior towards one another. These performances also portray natural phenomena like landscapes, plants and creatures in the same lively language. They also recount events and happenings in our lives and in the history of our societies. Hence these performances stimulate our observation and imagination. We begin to understand the things described better and in a new light. Oral literature gives us insight into people, things and events.

Food security

There is an alarming rate of increase in demand of food as we pursue the 21st century. According to statistics taken during the end years of the 20th century, human population over the world has increasingly grown in the past few decades. Records show that between 1900 and 2000, human population in the world grew by at least 300%; from 2 billion to 6 billion people. Today the world population is about 7 billion people. It is expected to hit an alarming 10 billion by 2050 says. The world population is evidently increasing according to recent statistics. On the other hand, land, the chief resource upon which food production relies on is not increasing. Land is not only faced with increasing pressure to accommodate its people, but also with the issue of competing interests regarding its use. Thus, at the current rates, it is not an over statement predicting that the demand of food may outdo food production in the future. It thus becomes inevitable to safeguard our food.
Besides, the increase in demand of food, the globe today is faced with a challenge of climate change. According to the World Food Program, over 87% of the world’s food production is directly depended on natural climatic conditions. It has further been concluded that at least 96% of the artificially produced food is indirectly depended on natural environments in one way or another. Therefore, with the hard striking shock of climate change, food production patterns are likely to change and the quantities of food produced to lower in the long run. Indeed, the effects of climate change are already being faced in majority developing countries, whose economies are agriculturally depended. The world has seen intense droughts and famines resulting from short periods of rains. There has also been flooding resulting from too much rain. Both of these cases are unfavorable conditions for food production. For these reasons, we are faced with decreasing food produce a result of the changes in climate. For this reason, there is a dire need to safeguard our food.

Factors contributing to environmental degradation in Africa

In Africa, there are poor education systems and health facilities which don’t provide relevant and sufficient awareness of the biodiversity. If present, the institutions are very scarce. Only found in Egypt and South Africa which become expensive for everyone to attend to. Lack proper knowledge on environmental conservation methods also increases chances of environmental degradation.
Nomadic culture of some societies in Africa, which involves moving with livestock from one place to another in search of greater pastures and water, can contribute to environmental degradation. This is because it leaves land bare devoid of green vegetation and water cultivation along river banks causes soil erosion which degrades soil. This leaves the previous land completely degraded and devoid of minerals and nutrients.
Another factor that contributes to environmental destruction is the political instability in Africa nations. Countries such as Sudan, Somalia experiences frequent conflicts which results to refugees whose main force is to flee to the neighboring peaceful countries. This creates stress and pressure on the little available resources on the host countries which might cause depletion of natural resources. The government of the host countries is also forced to spend funds that could have otherwise been used for conservation of environment. The funds would be used to supply food shelter and clothing to the refugees.
Since Africa is a poor nation, most African farmers lack enough credit facilities to invest in the development of Agriculture. They also lack funds to advocate their products on a large market scale and this in turn leads to a negative perception in the agricultural sector. Most people opt to urbanization which results to encroachment of agricultural land to urban centre hence land degradation.
